Last Friday I was home studying when I heard the unmistakable sound of a chainsaw. Checking out of my window I discovered that Belo Horizonte City Council had ordered that a tree in front of my building be cut down. They said that it was because it was sick, but it made me sad nonetheless.
It all started when there was an accident at the Municipal Park here in Belo Horizonte when a sick tree fell and killed an old woman who was near it. So the City Council closed the park checked all of the tress and cut down the ones that were sick.
Afterwards they started checking every single tree in the city. There were three trees in front of my apartment building and they had cut down one last year and now another one. It’s awful because they kept the sun out of my bedroom before and now the sun heats my bedroom all day long, not nice.
Not to mention that they were beautiful trees and that the birds quite enjoyed them. There was a family of woodpeckers that would always come to the tree they cut last Friday. So, yes, I’m very sad that they had to cut it down.
Here are some pictures featuring the tree and what became of it last Friday:
