MOOCs

Recently I have decided to try taking part on a MOOC (Massive Online Open Course), which are online courses open to everyone who wants to take them.

The first MOOC page that I found was Coursera. This company offers many courses from universities all around the world, but mainly from the USA. There are big names among the colleges offering courses at Coursera, such as Duke, Berklee College of Music, Brown, Columbia, Stanford, Princeton, Penn, and many other.

There are courses in every area that you can imagine: music, engineering, writing, biology. Everything is there. I took the course “The Language of Hollywood: Storytelling, Sound, and Color” by the professor Scott Higgins from Wesleyan University. The course was amazing. We watched many movies and analysed the transitions from silent movies to sound movies and from black and white to colour movies. It was an incredible experience. The classes are in videos and there discussions forums, activities and a final test. Every activity and test has a deadline that you must pay attention to, or you lose your points.

Course gives every student that successfully finishes a course a Statement of Accomplishment, so that you can actually put this course in your curriculum.

The other MOOC page that I’m currently using is Canvas. This company offers fewer courses than Coursera and it’s not really open for everyone because they limit the number of students in each course. I’m currently taking a Social Media course at Canvas, and it has been a great experience so far, but beware there is a lot of work to do. Canvas also gives the students a certificated when they successfully finish a course.

From my experiences with MOOC so far I conclude that they are going to become a really big part of the educational process in the future. It is amazing to think that knowledge is being shared all around the world, equally, for free and, most importantly, with quality. The courses I took so far and the ones I’m taking now have really added a lot to me as a student and professional. If you have a chance, check the courses offered by these two MOOC companies and others that you might find on the internet. I’m sure that you will find something that will be interesting for you to study.

Let me know what you thoughts about MOOC are!
